William
R. Lloyd, Sr. started Lloyd Tool in 1944 doing basic machining
of details. It began in the back of his gas station at G-4127
South Saginaw Street, Burton, Michigan. The shop moved to the
garage of his home at 2021 East Scottwood in 1948. The present
location at G-4341 South Saginaw Street was built in 1953. William
R. Lloyd Jr. purchased the business from his father in approximately
1955. The business then began to dramatically grow when it began
designing and building special machines for General Motors and
RCA.
In 1986, Richard R. Lloyd (William Jr.'s son) and Edwin R.
Lloyd (William Jr.'s brother) joined the company in the Sales
and Engineering capacities, respectively. Tamara J. (Lloyd)
Garleff (William Jr.'s daughter) joined the company in 1989
in a financial capacity. When William R. Lloyd, Jr. passed
away (on 5-18-95), he bequeathed the business to Richard,
Edwin, and Tamara in equal 1/3 shares.
The present facilities have had six (6) expansions including
the original building. There is presently 18,000 sq. ft of
building area. "Machining" area is 6,700 sq. ft,
"Machine Assembly" area is 8,400 sq. ft. and "Other"
(Office, Rest Rooms, Inspection, Crib, etc.) takes up the
remaining 2,900 sq. ft. When a years annual volume exceeds
the existing plants floor capacity, outside facilities are
leased for added assembly area. The Corporation's average
annual sales volumes are $ 3.5 million, with years 1985 and
1991 years both exceeding $ 6.0 million.
William R. Lloyd, Sr. learned the trade from his father and
retired from supervision of skilled trades at General Motors
in 1964. William R. Lloyd, Jr. learned the trade from his
father and managed Lloyd Tool until he passed away in 1995.
Richard R. Lloyd learned the trade from his father and the
formal apprenticeship program at Lloyd Tool. Edwin R. Lloyd
is a graduate Industrial Engineer from General Motors Institute
(Kettering Institute) and acquired his MBA from Eastern Michigan
University. Tamara J.Garleff is a Business graduate from Bakers
College in Flint Michigan.
